Mushroom Salisbury Steak

Back to basics with this simple version of a classic Salisbury Steak, only slightly lighter gravy.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup onion, grated ( I used chopped scallions)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef (round or sirloin, if possible)
  • cooking spray
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, quartered
  • 1/3 cup red wine (I used beef broth)
  • 1 1/4 cups beef broth (can use low-sodium)
  • 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar (I used apple cider)

Directions:

  1. Combine half of the onion, with pepper salt, garlic and beef.  Shape into 4 patties.
  2. Heat skillets over medium-high heat. Coat with cooking spray. Add patties and cook for 3 minutes on each side or until browned. Remove from pan.
  3. Melt butter in pan. Add mushrooms and saute for 4 minutes.
  4. Stir in wine(or broth) and remaining onion and cook another 2 minutes.
  5. Add flour to a measuring cup and stir in broth, add to pan and bring to a boil. Cook 5 minutes or until thick.
  6. Add patties and vinegar to pan and cook another 2 minutes.
